Devlog-8: Quests, Live Notifications, and Smarter AI NPCs

March 17, 2026 / Orion's Gate Team

This week's progress pushed the game forward in three important directions: player progression, real-time feedback, and AI-driven interaction. In short, we introduced a quest system, implemented a live notification system for crafting and collecting flows, and completed the RAG configuration plus backend endpoint development for our AI NPC. At the same time, we're already laying the groundwork for the next phase: bringing this AI experience into the Unity UI and improving the planet surface map with a fresh asset approach.

A New Quest System Is Now in Place

One of the biggest additions in this cycle is the quest system. This system is designed to give players a stronger sense of direction while also making progression feel more rewarding and dynamic.

The core idea is simple: based on your daily and weekly achievements, you can improve your rewards, unlock stronger gift outcomes, and gain more value from consistent play. This gives players more reasons to return regularly, engage with the game loop, and build momentum over time.

What makes this important is that the quest system is not just another checklist feature. It helps connect different gameplay layers into a more meaningful structure. Activities that once felt isolated now contribute to a broader progression rhythm. Instead of completing actions without context, players now have clearer goals and a better understanding of how their efforts translate into rewards.

This also gives us a stronger framework for future content. As we continue to expand the game, quests can evolve into a major bridge between exploration, crafting, social interaction, and progression-based incentives.

Live Notifications for Crafting and Collecting

Another major step forward is the implementation of the notification system. Players can now receive live notifications tied to their crafting and collecting actions.

This change may sound small on paper, but in practice it has a huge impact on user experience. Timely feedback is one of the most important parts of making a game feel responsive and alive. When a crafting action is completed or an item is ready to be collected, players now receive a clear and immediate signal instead of needing to guess, recheck menus, or interrupt their flow.

The benefit here is twofold.

First, it improves clarity. Players know exactly when something has happened and what action they can take next.

Second, it improves engagement. A live system naturally makes the world feel more active, because the game is communicating with the player in real time rather than waiting for them to manually discover every update.

This notification layer will become even more valuable as more systems are added. As the game grows in complexity, strong communication between the game and the player becomes essential. This feature is an early but important part of building that foundation.

AI NPC Infrastructure Reaches a Major Milestone

One of the most exciting achievements from this cycle is the completion of the AI NPC's RAG configuration and backend endpoint development.

This means the intelligence layer behind our AI-driven character is now in a much stronger state. Based on player input, the system can provide access to a wide range of information, including:

  • exclusive crafting recipes

  • lore and history concepts

  • current market evaluations

and many other context-aware outputs depending on the question being asked

This is a major step because it transforms the AI NPC from a simple character idea into a functional knowledge-driven system. The NPC is no longer limited to static dialogue. Instead, it becomes a living gameplay feature that can support discovery, progression, and worldbuilding all at once.

From a design perspective, this opens up a very powerful direction for the game. Players are not just clicking through predefined text. They are engaging with a system that can respond to their curiosity and provide useful or immersive answers based on what they want to know in that moment.

That makes the AI NPC more than a novelty. It becomes a tool, a guide, and part of the world's identity.

What Comes Next

With the backend side of the AI NPC now developed, the next major step is to integrate the endpoint into the Unity UI that is currently in progress. Once this is done, players will be able to directly ask questions and see Orin's answers inside the game experience.

This is an exciting stage because it is where infrastructure becomes visible. A backend system may be powerful, but the real magic happens when players can use it naturally through the interface. Bringing Orin into the UI will make the feature more accessible, more immersive, and more central to the gameplay loop.

Alongside that, we are also working on improving the planet surface map. To provide a better overall experience, we are designing a new asset pack that will support a stronger visual and environmental presentation.

This update is about more than visuals alone. Environment quality has a direct effect on how players read the world, navigate space, and connect emotionally to the setting. A better planet surface map will help us create a more memorable and polished exploration experience.

Closing Thoughts

This development cycle was about building systems that make the game feel more connected, more responsive, and more intelligent.

The new quest system gives players a clearer long-term progression path. The live notification system improves feedback and moment-to-moment usability. And the completed AI NPC backend and RAG setup marks a major milestone in turning Orin into a meaningful gameplay presence.

At the same time, the next steps are already clear. We want to make AI interaction visible in the Unity UI, and we want the world itself to feel richer through the upcoming planet surface map update.

Step by step, the systems are coming together-not just as separate features, but as parts of a larger experience.

And that larger experience is starting to feel very real.
